Academy originated from colonial church schools in the United States. The development of Academy roughly divided into two periods: the earlyfrom the end of 17th century to the end of 18th century, the later about from 1790 to the end of the 19th century. Academy started earlier, but the early developed slowly. The most rapid development was in the first half of the 19th century. Academy was the mainstay of the secondary and higher education of America, and had a huge impact on American politics,economy, social culture and education.In the colonial period, academy was mainly established by the church, cultivating the ministry candidate, at the same time conveying lawyer, sailing, businessman, and teacher to the society and other professional talents. Academy took more of higher education, on a par with the university level. The course could meet the needs of different people, both classic and practical. Starting from the late 18th century, the development of academy came into the heyday.From the point of the education object, academy play an important role in female education. Academy opened all courses for women, realized men's and women's education fair. Especially in the aspect of cultivating women independent ego consciousness, any other education institutions can't do it in that time.From the point of education level, the level of academy was varied, ranging from primary to higher education, and the high level of education occupied the mainstream.Due to the differences among regional education level, at the same time the church participating in the education had important influence on the level.From the point of the curriculum, the curriculum of academy dominated by practicality, both classical and fundamental. Academy absorbed all kinds of courses from Venture School, Latin Grammar School and English Grammar School,showing a huge inclusive and inherited.Recruiting students regardless of their age, attaching great importance to practical education and women's education, Academy was of great significance to vocational education, humanities education and female education in our country.
