Reference books is common and important tools for teachers. This position makes it has a great potential in the development of teachers' professional knowledge. Taking the thesis of history as an example, this paper examines the development of teachers'professional knowledge in the background of the new curriculum reform. It aims to define the function of history reference book in the background of the new curriculum reform and enrich the understanding for the history references of the education history sector. For them to provide some suggestions in giving the full play to the function of history reference book. In addition to the introduction, this paper mainly discusses the following questions:First of all, take the history references in the background of the new curriculum reform, and discuss the problem of exploring the function of the history references. This paper argues that the status of professional knowledge of the Chinese history teachers are not suited with the situation of the new curriculum reform, and most of the history teachers are faced with the situation between work and study, so that the development of their professional knowledge is limited. Reference books is common and important tools for teachers. It can and must makes a difference in promoting the development of teacher's professional knowledge.Secondly, making an empirical investigation and a text analysis about the function of teachers' professional knowledge development of history reference book. Using the first volume of high school history reference book which is publish by Peoole's Education Press as a study sample. And then doing a questionnaire survey of 50 history teachers. The result showed that history reference book had played a role in teachers'professional knowledge development but its function is limited. There are two reasons for this situation. One is the conservation function position led to history reference book rarely consider the need of teachers' professional knowledge development. Another reason is the current simple presentation of history reference book can't contain more knowledge and update knowledge constantly.Finally, puts forward the proposal to how can fully play the history reference book's professional knowledge development function from two aspects. The compilation aspect,what needs doing is specified as follows: 1. Emphasize history reference book's professional knowledge development function; 2. Richer all kinds of materials, balance distribution of knowledge; 3. Optimization of editors' knowledge structure;4,Development of plentiful electronic history reference book. From another aspect, history teachers should have a right attitude and a correct understanding of the function of history reference book.
