Practical texts have been mentioned along the line with theoretical texts and literary texts in the New Curriculum.However,frontline teachers pay much less attention to practical texts compared to the other two types of texts;current level of teaching in practical texts falls far behind the targets set by the New Curriculum,the reasons for which are worth investigating.Given the potential for further study and academic value of this research,and given the demand of future teachers,this essay will focus on the relevant research on practical texts and limit the level of study to that of high school education.Concerning the status quo,reading is of the primary importance in the teaching of Chinese Language and Literature.Therefore,this essay will target at the teaching in the reading of practical texts at the level of high school education.This essay will be developed in the following way:The introduction is a survey of the relevant literature in recent years and I will explain the significance of this research.The main body of this essay will be divided into five chapters.Chapter one focuses on the features of practical texts and the importance of its teaching.I will first explain the textual features of practical texts;then I will discuss the definition of practical texts as described in the New Curriculum and analyse how the characteristics of high school students might affect the teaching of practical texts;finally,I will discuss the significance of the teaching in practical texts.Chapter two is a study of the status quo in high school teaching of practical texts and I will analyse the reasons leading to the current teaching situation.Chapter three discusses the selection of practical texts in mainstream textbooks,the features of textbooks and the revelations for the teaching in text reading.In chapter four,I will start from the relationship between the Entrance Exam for Higher Education and practical texts,discuss the basic shape,characteristics,existing problems of the question-setting in the past papers of the Entrance Exam for Higher Education in the past ten years and the advice and what we might learn for future teaching.Chapter five focuses on how to improve the teaching in the reading of practical texts and some specific suggestions are given.
