In accordance with "Senior High School English Curriculum Standards",English course,as one of the major courses,aims to enhance the development of students,intelligence,emotions,mentality,attitudes and values and mastering a foreign language provides students with opportunities to be exposed to the international advanced cultural knowledge,science and technologies,as well as international communication.On the other hand,English course in Senior high school meets the demands for talents of national economic and scientific and technological development.With the interdisciplinary feature,English course can not only carry literary knowledge,but also can carry a variety of practical scientific knowledge.For the senior high school students,English is no longer the course only to impart English words,the rules of grammar,expressions or the structure of sentences,but to expand students' horizons,to complete student's structure of knowledge,to improve students scientific literacy,to cultivate students' interest in science or attitudes towards science,and to nurture students science logic,awareness,and spirit,which is favorable to students future development and even beneficial to the development of our society and country as a whole.The thesis starts with the introduction of the definition,range,common characteristics,and special textual characteristics of English popular science articles and then the analysis of the significance of popular science articles introduced into senior high school English textbooks from the aspects of individual,society,and country.Afterwards,the thesis attempts to know how the arrangement of the popular science articles in English textbooks and teaching practices are required in the English Curriculum Standards.According to the requirements,the thesis analyses the proportion,range of subjects involved,and types of topics of English popular science articles appearing in the three versions of senior high school English textbook.The second part of this thesis is to analyze the teaching of English popular science articles in senior high school.With the questionnaire designed for collecting information about current teaching situations and existing problems,based on the author's own experience and teaching thoughts of English popular science articles,the thesis attempts to figure out the reasons behind and manages to provide some useful suggestions and a specific teaching design of one English popular science article from textbook to those who may need,aimed to improve the teaching quality of English popular science articles in senior high school.
