An Investigation On The Application Of “Ban Ban Tong” In English Classroom Teaching In Senior Middle Schools

The application of information technology to elementary education has become a hot topic in the modern study. The New Curriculum Standards for Senior Middle School( New Curriculum Standard for short) of 2003 states that English curriculum should actively use various teaching resources to expand learning and use of English channel.In order to actively respond to the New Curriculum Standards and at the same time further speed up the process of education informatization and promote the balanced development of education, in 2013, Bengbu City of Anhui Province invested heavily in the construction of class, equipping the kindergartens, primary schools as well as middle schools with the installation of “Ban Ban Tong”.It has been more than two years since the equipments were installed. In order to know the current situation of the application of “Ban Ban Tong” in English class in senior middle schools, the author made an investigation and designed three research questions: 1) What is the current situation of the application of “Ban Ban Tong” in English class? 2) What are the attitudes of teachers and students towards it? 3) What are the existing problems of the use of “Ban Ban Tong” in English class?This research mainly adopted three methods: questionnaire, classroom observation and interview. The subjects were 236 students and 18 teachers from Bengbu senior middle schools. First, the questionnaires were designed to objectively learn the current application of “Ban Ban Tong” in English class and attitudes of teachers and students to the use of it. Second, the author observed 54 English classes to further understand the existing problem of the application of “Ban Ban Tong” in English class. Third, as the supplement of the first two researches, the author interviewed some teachers and students randomly to deeply understand their views on “Ban Ban Tong” and the impact“Ban Ban Tong” has on them. In the end, by analyzing the data collected, the author found some existing problems and tried to provide feasible pedagogic suggestions.The result of the investigation has shown that the majority of teachers and students hold positive attitudes to the use of “Ban Ban Tong” in English class and they explainedits help for themselves. In practical English teaching, the application rate of “Ban Ban Tong” is up to 80% and it is most commonly used for teaching new lesson and practicing in reading, grammar and listening classes. In the process of using “Ban Ban Tong”, teachers often use the courseware, English songs and movies to complete the teaching objectives of teaching language knowledge and enriching teaching materials to create authentic language environment. At the same time, based on the analysis and discussion of the data, the author found some problems existing in the use of “Ban Ban Tong” as follows: 1) The level of teachers’ operational skill of computer is rather low and special training for teachers is badly in need. 2) The lack of software of “Ban Ban Tong” brings inconvenience to the use of it. 3) Teachers’ lack of theoretical knowledge about CALL causes less variety of teaching methods, improper design of lesson plans,limit of teaching objectives achieved and neglect of students’ reactions.Based on the possible reasons for problems existing in the use of “Ban Ban Tong”,the author draws some pedagogic implications: 1) The school should organize teachers to carry on the training of “Ban Ban Tong”and provide the daily operation instruction for them; 2) The school should guarantee the good function of hardware and software of“Ban Ban Tong” and encourage teachers to apply “Ban Ban Tong” in their teaching; 3)Teachers should practice the relevant theoretical knowledge into the English teaching with “Ban Ban Tong”, and actively explore the teaching methods applied to the “Ban Ban Tong” class.In conclusion, by the investigation of the application of “Ban Ban Tong” in practical English teaching, the author finds some positive impact it has on language teaching, as well as the existing problems. By providing pedagogical implications, the author believes that this investigation will give some references for education authorities, schools and English teachers in Bengbu City to improve current status of the application of “Ban Ban Tong” in English classroom teaching which will have a far-researching significance for the development of the teaching and education under the background of information age.
