Under the situation of economic globalization,English has been becoming a vital tool in international communication and cooperation.Learning English well is an imperious demand for non-English speaking citizens. In China,English has been offered as a compulsory subject from the third year of elementary schools since 2002.As English is increasingly valued by people,a large number of extracurricular training institutions have emerged and expanded rapidly. With the increasing development on private tutoring, more and more students choose the extracurricular training institutions as the second class of learning English. Why are the training institutions prosperous? Are there any advantages of English teaching in such training institutions compared with those in regular lower secondary schools? Are there any problems of English teaching in regular lower secondary schools? What can be learned from the extracurricular training institutions? In order to answer these key questions,a detailed survey of English teaching will be conducted in both regular lower secondary schools and training institutions in Kunming. On the basis of the Constructivism theory, the paper makes a comparative analysis from the aspects of course setting, teaching staff sources, teaching practice, teaching materials and teaching facilities of the above two organizations.By adopting questionnaire method and interviewing method, the author has got a further understanding of junior high school English teaching in Kunming. The author also found some English teaching advantages melted with constructivism theory in training institutions and some prominent problems in regular schools. Then some reasonable suggestions were proposed for solving such problems and improving the English teaching in regular lower secondary schools. The thesis includes six chapters.Chapter One is the introduction.Chapter Two introduces the background of private tutoring.Chapter Three gives the literature review of constructivism theory.Chapter Four states the methodology of the thesis. Then data analysis, discussion and findings are presented in Chapter Five. The conclusion is summarized in the last chapter.
