With the rapid industrialization and urbanization in China, the energy shortage problems have become increasingly important. The economic development depends more and more on energy consumption which also impacts on the economy more than ever. The problems are as follows: China's low per capita energy, contradiction between energy supply and demand, excessive waste of energy use and so on. As a representative of the degree of energy use, energy efficiency as a comprehensive index reflects the energy use and conversion process in actual situation comprehensively which could be the basic indicators of a country's energy situation examined by scholars. Whether the energy efficiency is defined clearly? Whether the energy efficiency is affected by other factors or efficiency values? Whether there exists a connection between the energy efficiency and factor productivity? Those questions above has become a focus of attention among scholars. A study based on coupling coordination perspective will be used to consider the relationship between energy efficiency and total factor productivity in 30 provinces.Firstly, Traditional research on energy efficiency usually misguided by the concept on energy productivity or total factor productivity although there exists difference among them. A result was found in this paper which the real meaning and calculation of energy efficiency could not be described completely through summarizing the literature from 2000 to 2013. Consequently, theoretical basis and basic framework of the study will be built.Secondly, In order to discover the similarities, differences and relationship between each two of them, then a measurement and calculation combined with total factor energy efficiency theory and productivity theory based on the panel data from 2000 to 2012 was taken. The energy efficiency model and total-factor productivity are measured by the Data Envelopment Analysis(DEA-SBM) to determine whether it is valid scale, and the coupling-coordination relationship does exist.Thirdly, multivariate regression model are built combined energy efficiency, total factor productivity and other economic indicators, found that the impact of the former on the latter relationship does exist which degree of influence are changed by regions differences. Finally, based on the empirical results above, we can reached the following conclusions: firstly, there is a big difference of energy efficiency between different regions and cities, the adjustment of industrial structure and optimizing the allocation of resources should be considered properly. Secondly, we should pay more attention to the coupling coordination degree model and factors involved. Thirdly, we should analysis Multiple factors of energy efficiency, and coupling coordination degree of differentiation factors regional changes in the classification process.
