Energy is the lifeblood of economic development. The history of human development is a history of using energy to promote social change. At present, coal, oil and natural gas are still the main sources of primary energy supply. With the deepening of the understanding of the climate problem, all countries began to accelerate the development of renewable energy. At present,we are faced with three major energy-related issues:security of energy supply, development of alternative energy and improvement of energy efficiency.Energy is not inexhaustible,so how to improve energy efficiency will be a long-term issue. At present,China is in an important period of energy structure adjustment, focusing on supply-side structural reform and promoting the development and utilization of clean energy. In this process,we should innovate and improve the reform of energy governance, and promote the reform of quality and efficiency. Therefore, from a macro perspective,it is of great significance to understand the position of China’s energy efficiency in major countries in the world and find out what can be improved through comparison,so as to promote China’s energy reform and sustainable and healthy economic and social development. In this paper, the Total Factor Energy efficiency analysis of G20 countries will be conducted by using the literature research method and empirical research method and Data Envelopment Analysis. This research method can effectively avoid the influence of error caused by the artificial setting of variable parameters, and intuitively find China’s energy efficiency ranking in the G20 countries.By comparing the energy efficiency of different countries, this paper analyzes the factors influencing the differences in energy efficiency, and then discusses the feasibility of improving energy efficiency. At a time when countries around the world are exploring new ways of energy consumption, comparative studies of energy efficiency can help more targeted energy strategies. This paper is divided into six major chapters:introduction, domestic and foreign research status, total factor energy efficiency analysis and evaluation, empirical analysis of energy efficiency of G20 countries based on DEA model, countermeasures, conclusions and prospects of total factor energy efficiency evaluation and improvement of G20 countries. In the introduction part, the research background and significance of this paper will be introduced. In the second chapter, the domestic and foreign research literature will be reviewed and sorted out in detail to lay a foundation for subsequent research. At the same time, the research method, content and technical route of this paper will also be introduced. In the third chapter, this paper will define the indicators of the total factor energy efficiency evaluation system and explain the principles and application methods of the model. In the fourth chapter, this paper will conduct an empirical analysis of G20 countries, using data from 2014 to 2017 to reflect the timeliness of the study. In this chapter, two major models of data envelopment analysis are used to comprehensively measure the total factor energy efficiency of various countries and interpret the measurement results. In fifth chapter, this paper makes a comparative analysis of the status quo of total factor energy efficiency in various countries based on empirical analysis results and literature materials, and analyzes the possible influencing factors. The last chapter summarizes the research conclusions and makes suggestions for the improvement of China. In the end,the further research directions will be proposed.Taking total energy consumption, capital stock and labor input as input indicators and GDP as output indicator, this paper estimates the relative efficiency of energy efficiency of G20 countries with variable returns to scale and constant returns to scale.Through data analysis and literature research, the influencing factors of energy efficiency in different countries are discussed. The main conclusions of this paper are as follows:1)from 2014 to 2017,the total factor energy efficiency of G20 countries has obvious differences;2).The level of economic development affects total factor energy efficiency and has a positive correlation with pure technical efficiency;3)resource endowment and energy consumption structure affect total factor energy efficiency;4).China’s performance in total factor energy efficiency among G20 countries is not optimistic, and there is a big gap in pure technical efficiency and scale efficiency. The ultimate goal of this paper is to have a clear understanding of the position of China’s energy efficiency level among the world’s major countries, and to find out the gap between China and other countries and the causes of the gap. This paper finds that among the G20 countries,China leads the world in economic development, which is not matched by its extremely low level of energy efficiency.China has great room for improvement in energy efficiency. This paper also gives some Suggestions on improving total factor energy efficiency in corresponding chapters.
