By the end of 2015, the operating kilometers of China high-speed railway has exceeded nineteen thousand kilometers, which occupies more than 60% of the world's high-speed railway kilometers. China has become the fastest growing and largest country in high-speed railway all over the world. With the rapid development of high-speed railway, the scope of high-speed railway's impact is increasingly larger. Almost every airline company in China has suffered from high-speed railway in certain routes and most of their base airports are located in the cities which high-speed railway line come across. More specifically, it has a greater impact in middle and short range routes of airlines which caused continuous decrease in certain markets' number of passengers and annual decline in market share. This paper reviews the existing researches that deal with high-speed impact of worldwide civil aviation industry, reviewed the analysis of their existing strategies. By using the theory of oligopolistic competition, the competitive analysis between China Southern Airlines' Wuhan- Guangzhou route and Wuhan- Guangzhou high-speed railway line is taken as a starting point to study, presenting operating details of Wuhan- Guangzhou route before and after the opening of Wuhan-Guangzhou high-speed railway line and countermeasures of China Southern Airlines. SWOT analysis is applied in coping with high-speed railway growing for civil aviation, stating the comparative strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of civil aviation to high-speed railway. The main conclusion of this thesis is that civil aviation should rely on the national top level strategy "the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21 st Century Maritime Silk Road" and take positive measures to response the challenges of high-speed railway such as pushing the layout of the international routes, finding new profitable domestic routes, lowering the operating costs of production, enhancing the building of hub strategy and simplifying the check-in procedure.
