Verification Study Of A Modest Two-dimensional Model

Modesty is the traditional virtue of the Chinese nation, it is the psychological and behavioral character that an individual shows for his or her achievement and advantage. As a positive personality trait, modesty has an important effect on an individual's continuous improvements and the development of a good interpersonal relationship. Based on a comprehensive analysis of the relevant theoretical and empirical research of modesty, this study, with its aim at solving the flaws in this regard, researches the psychological characteristics of modesty among college students, and tests the dual model of modesty theoretically and empirically. The whole study consists three parts:Study 1 explores the connotation of modest in Chinese culture through the semantic analysis put forward by Wang-Fengyan and combing ancient books, and then develops the Dual model of modesty. It shows that modesty consists four kinds of connotation under Chinese culture, they are:don't pride of one's achievements, succeed because of not praise oneself up, pride leads to loss and modesty brings benefits, being ashamed of pride. On the value and instrumental perspective, the four connotation of modesty have different value and instrumentality.In study 2, the dualistic model of modesty was verified by asking subjects to classify the proverbs about modesty according to their semantic similarity. It concluded that the classification of modest proverbs fit the dualistic model well. The multi-dimensional scaling shows that stree=0.18 and RSQ=0.87, it means the dualistic model of modesty can explain the connotation of modesty in Chinese culture well.In study 3, SC-IAT was used to test the implicit attitude of contemporary college students to modesty. The result shows, though our time encourage free competition and characteristic expression, the contemporary college students think the modest people as more talented and successful.This study testified the scientificity of the dualistic model of modesty theoretically and empirically, and testified the positive implicit attitude of contemporary college students to modesty. This will have a positive effect on the understanding of modesty and the education of modesty.
