The purpose of educating people is not just imparting knowledge, and what is equally important is that to cultivate sound personalities.Social and emotional competences play a key role in both students' study and their development of sound personality.Collaborative for Academic,Social, and Emotional Learning(CASEL), which was founded by American psychology Daniel Goleman, started Social and Emotional Learning(SEL) Program to improve the emotional intelligence and social skills of students in 1994.Social and emotional learning is the process of acquiring and effectively applying the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to recognize and managee motions;developing caring and concern for others;making responsible decisions;establishing positive relationships;and handling challenging situations capably.Five key competencies are taught, practiced, and reinforced through SEL program, and emotional self-awareness is the key competence of them, which refers to the ability that individual can accurately assessing one's feelings, interests, values, and strengths,as well as maintaining a well-grounded sense of self-confidence.That is the foundation of several other competences of SEL.Emotional self-awareness include two aspects of competencesridentification of one's emotions and recognition of one's strengths. To identify one's emotions requires individuals to accurately assess their feelings, reasons for the emotions, and the consequences after the emotion. To recognize one's strengths requires individuals to find their strengths, encourage themselves in both favourable and adverse circumstances, and eventually form a positive and optimistic mentality and maintain a well-grounded sense of self-confidence.This study includes three studies:study one adopts quantitive methods and conducts pre-and-post tests on the experimental group and control group to explore the effect of emotional self-awareness course in promoting emotion intelligence(include the ability of identify one's emotions),resilience, and school social behaviors.Study two explore the effect of emotional self-awareness course on the level and content of students' recognizing their strengths, and their application of these strengths using the method of qualitative and quantitative. In study three,we adopted the method of case study to comb the mental changes of a typical case of all the subjects during the semester when we conduct the study, and analyze the reason why the effect of emotional self-awareness course is not significant deeply. This study finds out that emotional self-awareness course neither improve students' emotional intelligence and resilience, nor increase their positive behavior and reduce their anti-social behavior. But the study finds out that emotional self-awareness course can improve the students' ability to recognize their strengths. We also find out that students mainly recognize their strengths through the areas of their competences, interests, inner qualities and behaviors.Case study analyzes the influences of this intervention, and finds out that the relationship between the student and his or her peers, families and teachers would affect the effectiveness of the intervention severely.Based of this conclusion, researcher proposed some suggestions for the research,SEL course designing and the implementation of SEL program in the future. This study tracked the whole process of the intervention by sending questionnaires to head teachers and parents, gathering feedback of students every time after the class,in order to have a comprehensive and deep understanding of the details and dynamic process of this study. Finally, researcher summed up the experiences and shortages, perfected the emotional self-awareness course to a more effective and practical one.
