Following over 30 years of developments after the Reform,China's status in the international arena and its influence have been on the rise, accompanied by the increased convenience for foreigners to work and learn in China.Since the second-half of the previous century, friendlies of China have been sending officials to either go through systematic learning,or to participate in short-,mid-,or long-term mandarin studies and instructions at renown Chinese universities.Today, many universities abroad have established long-term cooperation and exchanges with Chinese institutions, and some Chinese colleges and universities will undertake various short-term mandarin instruction projects every year. The focus of my research is the use of the Audio-Lingual Method in short-term elementary level mandarin instruction projects. The purpose of this study is to illustrate, based on my internship experience, the problems faced by students of Japanese Tsuru Class learning via the Audio-Lingual Method at the elementary level, and to put forth specific suggestions and potential adoptable measures given the present situation. This thesis concludes with my findings on the Audio-Lingual instruction at the introductory level,as a basis to improve upon my command of the Audio-Lingual instruction method.Due to the short duration of administering the audio-lingual instruction in this short-term class, and that it takes time to see the effect of audio-lingual instruction,I find it difficult to assess the students' progress in their listening proficiency. This is exacerbated by the fact that many of the Japanese students are by nature reserve and introverted in class. What is certain however is that the Tsuru Class students expressed high satisfaction about their lessons.Nevertheless, despite having achieved short term teaching objectives and approval from the students,I am of the opinion that it is imperative to further research on conducting audio-lingual instruction in short-term courses. This does not only affect the long-term collaboration opportunity between the two institutions, but more importantly relates to Japanese students' interests in and learning of the Chinese language.Furthermore, given that the audio-lingual method is considered one of the challenging parts in teaching mandarin to foreigners, few teachers may have truly mastered this method of instruction.Hence more substantial research should be conducted on audio-lingual instruction to foreigners,in order to improve the efficacy of the instruction, beyond its theory. This thesis is structured into 5 parts. The first part briefly describes the motivation of this research, its current progress, contents and methods, with the aim to form a comprehensive understanding of the audio-lingual method in short-term introductory level mandarin course. The second part introduces in detail the Japanese Tsuru Class project, hosted by our International Sinology College. It primarily focuses on the development of the project, course management, and cultural experiential activities. The third part elucidates the problems that exist in short-term audio-lingual instruction, referencing the Japanese Tsuru Class short-term project.Part four presents targeted recommendations and adoptable measures, specifically towards problems observed in the Japanese Tsuru Class.Part five serves as an overall conclusion to the observation of audio-lingual instruction in the Japanese Tsuru Class, and it also presents post-instructional analysis. As a teacher new to the Chinese language audio-lingual instruction, the apparent lack of experience and mere theoretical application of the audio-lingual method induce the lack of self-satisfaction.Hence,strengthening research around the aforementioned instruction method is imperative, while accumulating teaching experience.Skills improvement in the audio-lingual teaching method should be coupled with clear understanding of the students' profile,to be better prepared for higher efficacy of audio-lingual instruction. It is hard to increase the efficacy of audio-lingual led classes in the short run through short-term courses, especially at the elementary level of Chinese language instruction.Hence, inexperienced audio-lingual teachers should focus on improving their overall teaching techniques and methods, instead of being solely task completion-driven.
