A Study Of Populist Tendencies In British Party Politics

Since populism came out,populism is always a popular objection of academic research.Not only because its concept is too vague to have a clear definition,but also because populism is changing constantly.The Brexit vote in Britain and the success of Donald Trump make people realize that,populism has come back.As the one of the most traditional countries,Britain did not avoid the attacks from populism,what’s more,there is a certain tendency of populism in party politics of Britain.The two Brexit vote in British history are somehow became a tool for parties to participate in the campaign.In the second vote,people in Britain swing between “the Brexit” and “regrets of the Brexit”,this reflects a fact that people is discontent about the current social situation and the government,the tendency of populism is extremely strong.Not only that,the rise of the UKIP also shows that there is a tendency of populism in Britain.British’s Labour Party was also influenced by populism.Jeremy Corbyn,became the leader of the party from a grassroot councilor.He caused an “Corbyn Fever” because of his persona charisma,his political goal that is “for the many,not the few” and his radical political style.The property of grassroot and representative of the public in this mania phenomenon also reflected the tendency of populism.As we can see,it is justified that there is a tendency of populism in British party politics.On the one hand,the election is the core of party politics,the public is the key to every party which intends to win.This implies the populism.The inner defects of two-party system in Britain caused the lack of ability in dealing with problems of the government.This lead to a negative emotion in public and a crisis of confidence of mainstream parties.All these above give a condition for the development of populism.On the other hand,the Euroscepticism also provide a hotbed for populism.
