The development of global knowledge-based economy and modern information technology has provoked the world education innovation and learning revolution,therefore promoted the implementation of a new series of basic education curriculum and teaching reform in our country. The new curriculum standard put forward to cultivate the scientific spirit, scientific attitude, scientific method, in which developing students' innovative spirit and practice ability is set as the education purpose, and students are treated as the main body and the core. The essence of the new standard is consistent with characteristics of activity teaching method. Applying activity teaching method to the junior high school biology class can not only meet the needs of students' all-round development, but also is an important way to implement quality education.This paper defines the concept of "activity", "activity teaching" and "activity teaching method", and expounds the theoretical basis of activity teaching method through literature study. By conducting the survey using questionnaire, several current appliance issues have been discovered in biology classes in junior middle schools,including low rate, inaccurate purpose, single mode and insufficient result. The cause of the issues has been analyzed from perspectives of teacher, student and evaluation system.This paper also puts forward the feasibility of the proposed optimization strategy via proposing four aspects of 'activity platform setup', 'activity situation creation','activity method optimization'and 'activity evaluation and improvement',on the basis of current status and causes of activity teaching method. Research has been conducted via questionnaire and tests during the practice.This study shows that the application of activity teaching method in the junior middle school biology classroom has a positive impact on students' learning motivation,communication and cooperation capability and ability to solve problems;therefore it has a positive influence on students' academic performance on biology.
