In 2014,the Shanghai Education Commission officially launched a new policy for college entrance examination and published the “Implementation method for Shanghai normal high school academic level examination”.The subjects for Shanghai college entrance examination changed from "three plus one" into "three plus three",which means the students need to choose three optional subjects instead of one subject. The new policy gives students more autonomy to choose what they want to learn, but it also increased the uncertainty of high school students' career development planning. This research used questionnaires including career investigation and Holland SDS on a total of 892 second-year high school students. It was aimed to explore students' choices on optional subjects.Furthermore this research was aimed to investigate the influence of students' career interests on their choices as well as on satisfaction of their choices. The result showed that geography and biology were the most chosen subjects among all six optional subjects. This was due to the arrangements of the examinations in the new policy. The differences between school levels indicated an effort to optimize the chances of higher score ranks by avoiding competition in popular subjects. And the students' satisfaction on their choices differed with general subject status and the relationships between different subjects. Moreover, the students' career interests were found to be significant predictors for students' choice of optional subjects. The research, art, management, and conventional types of career interest predicted female students' subject satisfaction. The realistic, investigative, social, and conventional types of career interest served as significant predictors for male students' subject satisfaction.
