In recent years, with the vigorous implementation of education reforms, education nowadays places more emphasis on cultivating students' key competencies, thinking qualities and key skills. As one of the core and basic elements of key competencies, research on critical thinking which is carried out under the background of disciplines has attracted more and more attention. This study attempts to use the high school chemistry innovation project as a carrier to explore the performances of critical thinking in high school students,so as to understand the current level of students' critical thinking disposition and skills, whether or not the chemistry innovation project has an impact on students' critical thinking and the specific performances of students in the chemistry innovation project. The study sample consisted of 64 students who had participated in the innovation project and 67 students who hadn't participated in the innovation project from the high school in Shanghai. The study used the California Critical Thinking Disposition Inventory and The California Critical Thinking Skills Test which both are the mature tools for critical thinking measurement to assess students' critical thinking level. What's more,we combined interviews with the questionnaires to further explore students' critical thinking process in the development of innovative projects. The findings show that: Firstly, high school students have a moderate overall level of critical thinking disposition and skills.Secondly, the high school chemistry innovation project has no influence on students' critical thinking disposition, but it has a positive effect on students' critical thinking skills.Thirdly, students have poor performance in critical thinking during the implementation of innovative projects, and there is still a large room for growth. The main manifestations are: Students rely more on authority than on evidence;students pay more attention to operational issues than the principle issues;students attach more importance to conclusions than the process. Finally, the reflections were made on the basis of the existing research.Firstly, research tools need to be refined.Secondly, the research sample needs to be more enriched.Thirdly, the theoretical basis for the study needs to be more in-depth.
