The Effect Of Bricolage On Ambidextrous Innovation

Enterprises universally face the Shackle of resource constraints.Due to resource constraints,some companies can not get a lot of resources from the outside world,innovation activities are difficult to carry out.How to get rid of the dilemma of resource constraints and achieve effective innovation is the basic topic of management research.Existing studies show that resource bricolage is an effective path for resource-constrained enterprises to achieve innovation.Resource bricolage is defined as “making do by applying combinations of the resources at hand to new problems and opportunities”.The existing research is not elaborate about the specific dimensions of innovation performance,boundaries conditions of bricolage.This paper focuses on the emerging and rapidly developing resource bricolage theory.Based on resource bricolage theory,this paper builds a research model about resource bricolage,organizational learning climate,ambidextrous innovation.This study aims to consider the effect of bricolage on ambidextrous innovation and the moderated role of organizational learning climate.A key element of resource bricolage that drives innovation is the recombination of resources at hand(Baker,2005).Through the strengthening of the recognition of the resource intrinsic attribute,exploring the internal value of resources,and enterprises engaged in bricolage attempt to construct the creative resource combination.The new resource combination may not be consistent with the original routines,resulting in unforeseen creative results.Digging resources inherent heterogeneity,creative resource combination and other characteristics are closely related to breakthrough innovation.At the same time,the resource bricolage follows the "satisfying model" and emphasizes low cost and rapid response.Once the effect acheived,bricolage would stop.It imites the degree of innovation,resulting in more incremental innovation.This contradiction explains why resource bricolage could create ambidextrous innovation.Organizational learning climate includes exploit climate and exploratory climate.It plays an oriented role in enterprise learning and knowledge accumulation process.The achievement of innovation by bricolage requires learning and the supply of knowledge.Different type of innovation perforance from resource bricolage requires different knowledge.Therefore,the organizational learning climate and resources bricolage fit each other,organizational learning climate plays an important role in in the relationship between resource bricolage and innovation.The appropriate organizational learning climate is the catalyst to the achievement of effective innovation by bricolage.Based on the survey data of 139 enterprises,this paper examines the hypothesis and the theoretical model in this paper.It found that:(1)Resource bricolage has a significant positive impact on firm incremental innovation and the breakthrough innovation.The resource bricolage is an effective way to realize the innovation of the resource-constrained enterprises.(2)About the moderated role of the organizational learning climate,exploit climate play a positively moderated role in the relatioship between resource bricolage and incremental innovation;exploratory climate play a negatively moderated role in the relatioship between resource bricolage and incremental innovation;exploit climate play a negatively moderated role in the relatioship between resource bricolage and breakthrough innovation;exploratory climate play a positively moderated role in the relatioship between resource bricolage and breakthrough innovation.The theoretical contribution of this research is as follows:(1)The innovation is deconstructed for the first time,and the relationship between resource bricolage and firm innovation is comprehensively expounded.(2)Based the view of organizational learning climate,explore the boundary conditions of bricolage.(3)Based on the large sample data in the background of China's transition economy,it enriches the situation of resource bricolage theory research and enhances the universality of the study.The conclusion of this study has some practical implications.(1)It is an effective way to achieve innovation for resource-constrained enterprises.The value of the resources at hand can not be overlooked,by strengthening the understanding of the inherent attributes of resources,creative resource combination can help enterprises to achieve innovation,and even breakthrough innovation;(2)Different enterprises may hold different innovation strategies,different innovation needs matching the appropriate situational factors.Through the good influenc of organization learning climate,resources bricolage can play a better role in innovation achieving.Enterprises engaged in incremental innovation could appropriately strengthen the strength of exploit climate.Enterprises engaged in breakthrough innovation can appropriately strengthen the strength of exploratory climate.
