The biotopes of ecological importance in urban environments in China are under great pressure because of negative factors such as urbanization, air pollution and human disturbance.Biotope mapping is of paramount significance for urban planning and management as well as natural conservation for the future generations. The Xuanwu District of Nanjing city in China, with an area of 74.78km2,which consists of a complex landscape pattern of "mountain, lake, city, forest" was investigated in this study. This study aims at understanding the characteristics of urban biotope system in the case of Xuanwu District(Nanjing,China),to make a plan for the environment and ecosystem, for environment-friendly urban management and to establish a plan for ecosystem conservation and restoration. The overall goal of this research is to elaborate a classification system and environmental assessment database for an urban landscape monitoring program, based on interpretation of aerial photographs, land use map, field verification and GIS platform. It aimed at providing a comprehensive biotope mapping of the research area for environment ecosystem as well as sustainable urban planning and management. The full essay is divided into five chapters:the first chapter, introduction;the second chapter, the previous study of urban biotope classification system and biotope value assessment system. The third chapter is about the establishment of the database of Xuanwu District. The fourth chapter is the evaluation of the habitat unit in Xuanwu district. The fifth chapter is about the Enlightenment of the mapping of habitat units to the natural protection and urban and rural planning.Among them, the third and the fourth chapters are the key chapters of this study. The third chapter is about the establishment of the database of Xuanwu biotope mapping system. With the help of aerial photographs, basic CAD map, land use map and field verifications.the building of the urban biotope data base of study area, which will be later documented in GIS.Meanwhile, the biotope distribution in different land uses can also be deferred and analysed.Through the Arc GIS 10.2 platform for further processing and operation,multi-scales of biotope mapping are generated according to different needs for spatial features and analysis. The fourth chapter is the evaluation of biotope mapping in Xuanwu district. The biotope rarity, patch size, permeability, and community environment reconstruction ability of these indicators into the parameter BVA(biotope value assessment)of the study area, and in the spatial planning of habitat value based on the results, puts forward the ecological conservation priority strategy. Then, with Fragstats 4.2,we study on the spatial pattern of area index, landscape fragmentation index and spatial distribution index to carry out multi-scale in the study area, the landscape pattern of study city cultural habitat and semi natural areas. On the basis of this, the author puts forward some suggestions on the existing problems in the research area by the theory of "patch-corridor-matrix".The originality of this essay lies in the following contents:(1)At present, domestic research of biotope mapping is just starting up,the current researches are only involved in partial area of certain cities. And there haven't reached a consistent way of biotope classification system. In terms of biotope classification accuracy and the comprehensive level, there still exists a certain gap between the western developed countries. Also, how to put further application of biotope mapping results into city planning remain uncertain; In this research,I carried out translation and in-depth comparative study of the existing biotope classification system of countries and regions, combining with Chinese land use standard and city land classification method, and finally puts forward a set of relatively scientific Biotope classification system of Nanjing City.(2)In terms of research methods, this research use the Arc GIS 10.2 platform and Fragstats 4.2,we carry out the research by using the comprehensive biotope mapping with typical sample survey method. In this way, different scales of mapping output are carried out in the study area in order to cope with the diverse needs of urban ecological planning.(3)Through the assessment of biotope value, here we put forward the concept of ecological landscape pattern "patch-corridor-matrix",which will be used for the lack of connection between the biotope type, the concept of landscape ecological zone will be used here for a core area with a surrounding connectivity and/or buffer zone,in which the connectivity between biotope.(e.g.,connectivity included c.ycle paths, footpaths, road verges and planning-style corridors—even in some cases with connectivity of habitats and landscapes, businesses and communities at a range of scales). The results of this study provide the basis for the rational use of land resources and the protection of natural elements.By analysing biotope types and carrying out conservation value assessment in study areas,we hope to provide a platform for sustainable planning and the recovery of equilibrium in the city and the region.
