With a growing number of new and renovated medical facilities and a growing demand for quality medical services, user feedback now plays a bigger role in the process of hospital design. But as a result of insufficient mechanisms in place, few users of hospital buildings are able to participate in the design process, thus failing to present the voices of the entire groups of users. In response, the thesis focuses on how to integrate user feedback into the design process in a sound and effective manner, and is intended to increase the participation of users in design process and improve their satisfaction with built environments. This thesis selects five groups of users: patients, visitors, medical staff, supporting staff and administrators. It adopts a series of measures, including literature review, social study and comparative studies from an international perspective. The research starts with a literature review to study the impact of insufficient user feedback on the satisfaction levels of end users and to shed a light on major reasons behind insufficient feedback. Then it makes a comparative study of best practices at home and abroad to draw lessons on methods for increased user participation and effective design process. This section is followed by three tools of quantitative analysis of user feedback. For example,Delphi method is adopted to collect views of users in the stage of pre-design;KANO model is used to establish a set of weighted indicators in the stage of design;and,Quality Function Deployment is used to study whether proposed indicators can fully meet user demand. In the end,the thesis discusses the methodology of building a user feedback-based system for the evaluation of hospital design, and attempts to apply the system to a real-life project. The results of the research are a meaningful supplement to methodological studies on the building of quality evaluation systems for hospital design. Also,in certain ways it helps translate user-centric principles into action and choose design that work best for a hospital.
