In the increasingly competitive international engineering market, the improvement of the international project performance has played an important role for Chinese construction enterprises’ long term stable development as well as expansion in overseas market. However, the development of Chinese construction enterprises in the overseas market is still in a rough expansion and the establishment of an organizational culture is not perfect. The establishment of a suitable type of organizational culture to help Chinese construction enterprises manage the overseas project team and improve the international project performance should be carefully considered. In the complex international engineering market,it is difficult for Chinese construction enterprises to accomplish a project smoothly if they only rely on their own internal resources.Good relationship with external stakeholders is necessary for solving problems encountered in the project. Therefore, this study discussed how Chinese construction enterprises can establish a suitable type of organizational culture and to obtain the external relational capital in the external environment, and further enhance the international project performance. The methodology adopted in this study combined qualitative and quantitative analysis. In the qualitative analysis, seven cases from four enterprises are analyzed using the grounded theory method, and the organizational culture of Chinese construction enterprises is divided into hierarchy and market two types according to the characteristics of stability, the relational capital is divided into four dimensions which are communication, cooperation, trust and commitment, and the model of organizational culture, relational capital and international project performance is preliminarily constructed.Based on the five-factor theory of organizational culture, cultural dimensions theory, social exchange theory and transaction cost theory, hypothesis are put forward from the initial model. In the quantitative analysis,62 valid questionnaires were collected using the snowball method, and the hypothesis were tested by hierarchical regression analysis. The results show that,(1)market culture and hierarchy culture both have significant positive impact on the international project performance;(2)communication,cooperation and trust have significant positive impact on the international project performance, but commitment has significant negative impact on the international project performance;(3)relational capital has partial mediation effect in the impact of both market culture and hierarchy culture on the international project performance. The first contribution of this study is to expand the understanding the impact of organizational culture on the international project performance in construction industry, especially for the hierarchy culture.Second,to discover the partial mediation effect of relational capital in the influence of organizational culture on international project performance and confirm the importance of relational capital on international project performance.Last,to provide a supplement and reference for qualitative research in the field of international engineering market.
