Water resources are the basis of human survival and social development. With the excessive use of water resources, soil erosion, water environment deterioration and the contradiction between supply and demand become increasingly prominent. These problems are more pronounced in desert areas.Sand industry is one of the important ways to improve ecological environment and develop local economy in desert areas.Based on the arid natural conditions and fragile ecological environment in desert areas, water resources have been an important factor affecting and restricting the development of sand industry in desert areas and even in the future. This study takes Ulanbuh Desert ecological sand industry area as the research area.According to the actual situation of the region, the water supply and demand balance method is used to select water supply and demand indicators, and then the water resources carrying capacity balance index(IWSD)of five representative industries in the study area is calculated. The largest scale of the major types of sand industry that can be supported by water resources in Ulanbuh Desert ecological sand industry area is calculated. The research results show that:The water supply sources in the study area include groundwater,Yellow River water and annual precipitation. The main sources of water in 2020 and 2030 will be groundwater and Yellow River water. In 2020,the available water amount of groundwater accounts for 56.7%,the Yellow River water volume and precipitation accounted for 25.9% and 17.3% respectively. In 2030,the available amount of groundwater accounted for 42.5%,the annual amount of water from cited by the Yellow River accounted for 35%,and the precipitation accounted for 22.4%.The water resources carrying capacity balances index(IWSD)of the study area is 0.002 in 2020,indicating that the water resources in the study area are in a loadable state.Under the planned water resources, the calculation results of the maximum planting area of the main types of sand industry are: grapes planting industry is 20.1 km2;the science and technology sand grass industry is 116.5 km2,of which the Cistanche deserticola and Cynomorium songaricum plantations are respectively 41.1 km2,and the Salix cheilophila industry is 34.3 km2;the maximum planting area of the Glycyrrhiza uralensis planting industry in water-saving agriculture is 33.5 km2.In 2030,the water resources carrying capacity balances index(IWSD)is0.0005,indicating that the water resources situation is in a weakly loaded state, and the degree of water resources redevelopment and utilization is small. The calculation results of the maximum planting area of the main types of sand industry that can be carried are: grapes planting industry has a total area of 86.8 km2;the science and technology sand grass industry is 268.3 km2,of which the Cistanche deserticola andCynomorium songaricum planting industry are respectively 107.3 km2,the Salix cheilophila industry is 53.7 km2;and the maximum planting area of the Glycyrrhiza uralensis planting industry in water-saving agriculture is 53.4 km2.This study understands the status quo of water resources in the western sand area of Inner Mongolia and clarifies the supply and demand of water resources in the sand area.It provides a scientific basis for the planning of water use for the development of the ecological sand industry in Ulanbuh Desert. It is of great significance for developing sand industry, improving ecological environment and realizing sustainable development in desert areas.
