The current mainstream context of urban ecological space planning originates from the idea of “passive defense protection” born in the 19 th century in Western countries. That is to say, under the influence of island biogeography and other natural conservation theories, the natural ecosystems in urban areas are protected in isolation by resorting to the island-like ecological space with the largest boundary demarcation. In the absence of a clear understanding of the functions, processes and structures of natural ecosystems, such a way of protection often leads to the deterioration of the urban ecological space into a sensitive area vulnerable to erosion, which is characterized by inadequate self-sustaining capacity and passive defense against human activities. At the same time, the protected ecological space becomes an island in self-protection and loses its communication with the outside world.Self-cultivate and self-renew become difficult.Aiming at the problem that "passive defense protection" is difficult to guara ntee the self-sustaining ability of urban ecological space, this study is in the con text of "active ecological protection",a new consensus reached by western natur al conservation when they break through the limitations of "passive defense prote ction",and through its five perspectives,to focus on the enhancement of self-sus taining ability of urban ecological space. This paper explores the way of urban e cological space planning based on the ecological concept biotope, which focuses on self-sustainment.And on the basis of understanding the essence and mechanis m of self-sustainment ability, drawing lessons from the experience of "biotope" e cological space planning in Eurasian countries, assimilating the knowledge of "fu nction, process and structure" from system ecology, biogeography, animal behavio ur and landscape ecology, the study construct an urban ecological space planning method Under the support of GIS.The method system consists of five steps: biotope mapping, selection of foc al species, core habitat search, construction of corridor and compound optimizatio n of habitat network.Firstly, the "describable, identifiable and predictable" biotop e is used as the spatial unit to synthesize the information of biotope mapping su pported by multi-source data. Then, under the guidance of the focal species whic h can represent the health of regional ecological functions, the core habitats suita ble for species survival are evaluated by interpreting the environmental conditionsunder which species can survive. Finally, the ideal habitat network composed of "core habitat" and "connection system" is constructed by compounding multi-sp ecies habitat network, and the network is optimized and revised by considering e nvironmental security and other factors. In the ecological planning of Xindu Dist rict in Chengdu City, the application of biotope method has constructed a self-su staining ecological network for Xindu District, and achieved multiple objectives i cluding supporting ecological protection and urban development. This method focuses on the self-sustaining ability of urban ecological space, uses the frontier vision of ecological protection planning at home and abroad as the theoretical support, improves the biodiversity of urban ecological space as t he key,and solves the dilemma of "passive defense" of urban ecological space with "biotope",so as to ensure the health, stability and function of urban ecolog ical space.
