Exploration And Study On The Renewal Of Yiwu's Old City

After nearly seventy years of development,China's urban renewal is still progressing with remarkable achievements.Combining the renewal practices,Mr.Wu Liangyong has proposed the theory of organic renewal.Furthermore,Shenzhen,Shanghai and other districts have formulated their respective urban renewal methods and supporting policies in accordance with reality.It is true that theories and policies have better guided urban renewal all over the country,but as urban renewal involves policies,regulations,systems,mechanisms,urban functions,industrial structures,land use and many other aspects,problems such as"developing economy at the cost of protection","focusing on demolition instead of renovation" and "paying more attention to development than to supporting facilities" have emerged in the local renewal processes.To make urban renewal sustainable,we should pay attention to these problems with clear directions.This paper takes the old city of Yiwu as the research scope,and "the old streets,the old industrial zones(including old warehouses),the old markets and the old residences(including villages-in-the-city)as the research objects.Based on the reality,it tries to explore the suitable renewal methods for Yiwu.Meanwhile,it is hoped that these methods can provide some reference and guidance for the development of other urban renewal.Starting from the four types of research objects,the old city is investigated in terms of area,grid and full coverage of present situations.The existing problems and the renewal difficulties are analyzed,and renewal approaches and strategies are proposed.Based on the reality of Yiwu,four types of spatial renewal methods are suggested,namely "reconstruction and development","functional change","remediation and optimization" and "protective renovation".Also proposed are area renewal strategies,supplemented by empirical cases.Moreover,a variety of urban renewal operations "led by government,property owners and investment developers" should be established and corresponding renewal systems and policies be formulated.
