Cultivating a large number of STEM talents with scientific,technical,engineering and mathematical abilities is of great importance of a country to cope with the challenges of the future world and that is an important way to enhance its international competitiveness.The undergraduates of STEM major were the future labor force who has received comprehensive and systematic training.Moreover,they were high-quality human resources who have great STEM professional skills.They will be the main force to fill the future market’s vacancies of America,and they can be the booster to promote the development of science,technology and economy of America.Therefore,in recent years,the United States will focus on STEM education,and pay a particular attention to the cultivation of undergraduate STEM talent.The federal government and agencies have published relevant policies to guide the STEM education,then,the non-governmental organizations and universities also made a variety of specific plans to improve the cultivation of STEM talents.Focusing on increase the number of STEM talent,and improve the STEM talent comprehensive ability.This study has summarized the policies which the United States federal government and institutions made to promote the development of undergraduate STEM education and STEM talent cultivation by the literature analysis and text analysis methods.Besides,this study introduced the undergraduate STEM related programs and practices of Association American Universities.This thesis analyzed the STEM talent cultivation mode of mechanical engineering in Purdue University and Michigan State University,and concluded the specific pattern characteristics of STEM talents cultivation mode in American undergraduate stage,with the aim of providing a reference to our country.The paper is divided into the following parts:The first part,first of all,points out the topic background and the significance of this research;moreover,summarizes domestic and foreign related research;finally,state the ideas and methods.In the second part,defines the core concept of "STEM talent" and "STEM talent cultivation".Points out the theoretical basis of this paper,including the education theory of " Engineering With a Big E ",the theory of "learning in practicing" and "teaching,learning and practicing".In the third part,it reviews the policy of STEM talents cultivation in the United States,and introduces the practice of STEM talents cultivation in the United States..In the fourth part,the paper chooses the mechanical engineering major of Purdue University and Michigan State University as the main research objects,,and analyze its cultivation goal,the curriculum establishment,the teaching method and the teaching evaluation in STEM talent cultivation mode,then,summarizes its pattern characteristic.In the fifth part,summarizes the full text;enumerates the inspiration;points out the insufficiencies of this research;and makes prospects for the future.
