With the communicative translation principle presented by the famous British translation theorist Peter Newmark as a guide,this paper aims to analyze specifically on some issues in the translation of English encyclopedias and explore the appropriate solutions and coping strategies as well.Selected from an English encyclopedia of medieval Islamic civilization,which is typical of informative texts,the original text mainly introduces the social culture of the Islam lands duringthe sixth and seventeenth centuries.Based on a detailed analysis of the linguistic features of the text,this paper will focus on the application of communicative translation principle and discuss the probable translation techniques,including transformation between parts of speech,conversion in voices,division of complex sentences and other translation skills,to solve the problems aroused by significant differences between English and Chinese.It has been clarified that the communicative translation method has practical significance for the translation of English encyclopedias.The author sincerely hopes that the coping strategies proposed to solve difficulties she encountered in the translation process could offer some help for future translators.
