With the blend of Chinese and western culture,a great number of foreign literary works have been brought to China and translated into Chinese, including the works of folk-lore and legends. The translator chooses four stories “The Lost Bell”,“How Loki Wagered his Head”,“The Strange Builder” and “The Dwarfs' Banquet” from Folk-lore and Legends: Scandinavia, translates them into Chinese in order to let more Chinese people learn about exotic culture, and completes this report based on the translation practice.Under the guidance of Eugene A.Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory, this report aims to explain how to apply Functional Equivalence Theory to achieve the closest and the most natural equivalence between the source language and the target language from four levels, including lexical, syntactic, textual and stylistic level during the translation process. The report consists of five parts. The first part introduces the task background and the source text. The second part mainly describes process, including preparations before translation, translation process, and post-translation revision. The third part presents the theoretical framework, including an overview of the Functional Equivalence Theory and its principles. The fourth part shows some typical case analyses in detail, discussing some specific translation strategies such as annotation, order readjustment, addition and reproduction of figures of speech in the translation practice. Some losses and gains and experience from this translation practice are summed up in the last part, and the translator hopes that it can inspire other translators and offer some references for other translation practices of similar style.
