The present translation report is based on the translation of four philosophical treatises: Concerning Friendship,Concerning Old Age,On Benefits,and The Praise of Folly.There are excerpt of miscellaneous,the last section of the book named Outline of Great Books consisting of 8 sections together,which was written by the famous Scottish writer John Alexander Hammerton and published by Amalgamated Press,United Kingdom in 1936.As one of the tasks introducing thoughts and perspectives of some great foreign thinkers,the translation task of the source text is of some significance.These four philosophical treatises,as the source text,are with their own features in presenting arguments and their own practical significance in meaning.After a thorough analysis of the source text itself,the author of the report completed translation under the guidance of Vermeer's Skopos theory and Peter Newmark's communicative translation strategy.The translation report contains five parts: The first part is an introduction to the source of the translation task and the significance of the source text.The second part is the task description,containing background introduction,analysis of the source text and requirements from the entrusting party.The third part,consisting of Before translation,While translation and After translation part,is the main part of the report.Before translation is about some preparation work carried on ahead of the actual translation process;While translation discusses quality control,process description and details of translation process;After translation contains evaluation after translation.The fourth part is Case Analysis,which mainly focuses on analyzing difficulties in translation of culturally-loaded words,elliptical sentences,long sentences and sentences applied with rhetorical devices with examples.The fifth part is Conclusion,in which the translator makes a summary of what is done in the report,meanwhile,brief reflection on the source text,translation and translator herself is also made in this part,besides,suggestions to MTI students for their translation report writing is given.Report has shown that when translating philosophical treatises,the translator should focus on the accuracy in conveying meaning and choosing words and expressions,the logic expressing and consistency of sentence meaning,and his/her accumulation of professional knowledge and cultural knowledge.
