The present project consists of two parts:the first part is an English-Chinese translation of an excerpt from The Chinese in America--A Narrative History by Iris Chang,a Chinese American writer who authored the Rape of Nanking. The second part is a critical commentary which summarizes what the translator has learned in the process of translating the said text, including the difficulties and problems she has encountered and the solutions to them that the translator has come up with by drawing on the theories and strategies she has learned in her MTI classes. One of such theories the translator has found to be most helpful is Peter Newmark's theory about semantic translation and communicative translation,as well as his typological classification of texts into informative, expressive and vocal types. In the report that follows, the translator will show through examples how the theories have helped her to overcome some of the difficulties and how the execution of this translation enables her to develop a better understanding of issues related to translation.Structurally, the translation report falls into six parts, including an Introduction,a Literature Review,a review of Peter Newmark's translation theories, and a citation of cases or examples of how such theories fit into the practice of translation and finally,a conclusion.
