This is a translation project report which based on Communicative Translation Theory.The source text is Chapter seventeen of the book Managing Pig Health and the Treatment of Disease.Written for the pig production frontline,the target readers of the book are technical personnel in the forefront of pig production,pig production managers and the pig farmers.It is also a useful reference book for the advisers and technical service personnel.It covers the content of the porcine anatomical structure and physiological characteristics and general principles of the pigs' health management,as well as the systematical introduction of the diseases in different stages.The book is chosen to be translated and published to introduce the advanced production equipments,techniques and management in western countries,which provides help for the development of the Chinese livestock breeding.This translation task is analyzed from the perspective of communicative translation theory.Peter Newmark put forward three text types: expressive,informative and vocative,and the informative text is suitable for communicative theory.The translation purpose of the book is to introduce the advanced techniques of livestock breeding comprehensively and veritably,which serves as the informative function.Thus,based on the theory,the translator paid attention to the communication effect as well as the source text.The report is composed of five parts.The first part begins with the description of the project through its background,nature and value.In the second part,the translation process is given from three stages.The third part is about the Communicative Translation Theory.The fourth part,the most important part discusses several translation skills used in the project from three aspects: words,complex sentences and the logical relationship in one paragraph.And the last part is the conclusion.Through this project report,the writer hopes that a little assistance can be given to the translation of Specialized English for Veterinary Medicine.
