This paper looks at the problems of interpreting as a mode of communication used by church interpreters in China. With the growing number of foreigners coming through and settling down in major cities in China, the ministry of many urban churches throughout China is becoming more multicultural and multilingual. As a result, there is an increasing need for church interpreters who are equipped with linguistic and professional interpreting skills to provide simultaneous interpretation at church services.Based on the rather comprehensive explanation of the simultaneous interpreting in the effort model illustrated by Gile(Gile's Effort Model),it was selected as a platform for analyzing the data collected from Christian church interpreters in Beijing.Material of Chinese to English simultaneous interpretation was collected from two different church services in Beijing. The data included, video and audio recordings of the interpreters'performance, full transcripts of the sermons and interpretation based on the recordings. The descriptive research provides a summary of the problems church interpreters in China face while pursing the objective of communication through simultaneous interpreting. At the same time,it also provides an introduction to understanding church interpreting in China—its history, cultural setting and present condition. At the end of this paper,it concludes that the challenges faced by church interpreters in China include, external factors including not having a secluded room for conducting simultaneous interpreting, internal factors including insufficient knowledge-base of scripture and Biblical history, and lack of understanding of simultaneous interpreting strategies for dealing with the various challenges of the style and speed of speakers. Finally,it concludes by presenting relevant strategies that can help church interpreters improve their simultaneous skills so they can better achieve their objective of clear communicating.
