The translator selects the book Far From the Tree:Parents,Children and the Identity as the translation material for this translation practice which is a social science book written by an American writer Andrew Solomon.Different from literary works,social science books are both documentary and argumentative.In terms of its content,Far From the Tree are observations and researches on the various social phenomena related to the psychology of adolescent development.The scientific domain involved in the source text is extremely wide,including psychology,medicine,politics,economics,etc.The author chooses to translate the fifth chapter of this book,due to this chapter contains a lot of real cases of autism,including their symptoms and etiological analysis.In accordance with these features,the translator decides to adopt Eugene A.Nida's functional equivalence theory as the guiding theory of this translation practice.The report consists of five chapters.Chapter one introduces the resource,purpose and significance of this translation task.Chapter two is a description of the translation task,including the preparations and the process of this translation task.Chapter three is theoretical basis,briefly introducing the functional equivalence theory and its influence.Chapter four is case study,which analyzes the difficult points as well as the translation methods and techniques that applied in this project through specific cases,and the significance of the functional equivalence theory is demonstrated by the analysis on the translation of specific vocabularies as well as long and difficult sentences.Chapter five summarizes the lessons and problems on the basis of this translation practice,and the suggestions for further translation studies.The report aims at studying translation techniques and methods applied to the translation of the fifth chapter of the book Far From the Tree,enhancing the translator's understanding of this theory,further clarifying the guiding significance of the theory for different works and improving the translator's level of translation and appreciation.
