A Report On Interpreting Of "Connecting Shandong With Global 500-Europe" Based On Functional Equivalence Theory

With the increasing globalization,economic activities especially business and trade communications among countries are becoming tightly linked.Shandong Province has always been rushing at the frontline building new height of opening up.Although affected by the Covid-19 pandemic,the implement of attracting foreign investment and talents didn’t stop.Under the leadership of CPC Shandong Committee and Shandong Provincial People’s Government,Shandong Province hosted five"Connecting Shandong with Global 500" activities.The sixteen prefecture-level cities of Shandong Province hosted related supporting activities to build new institutional communication channel with Global 500 enterprises and to enhance the confidence of multinational corporations to cooperate with Shandong Province,which has positive effect on stabilizing foreign investment in Shandong and build a new height of opening up.The activity was organized by Shandong Provincial Department of Commerce,and was strongly supported by the Ministry of Commerce,the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,Chinese embassies and consulates abroad,the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development,relevant provincial departments and key enterprises.Partners such as Fortune Group and foreign business associations in China also provided active assistance.The thesis is English-Chinese interpreting practice report based on a business activity "Connecting Shandong with Fortune Global 500—Europe".Based on Eugene Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory,the thesis analyzes how to implement functional equivalence in interpreting to make the parties using different languages avoid misunderstandings in mutual communication.Online business interpreting brings more challenges for interpreters like unstable internet and equipment.Meanwhile,online interpreting usually cannot solve problems which require face-to-face communication.Furthermore,unlike translation,interpreting is more time limited that interpreters have much less time to think about the text so that it is hard to achieve textual equivalence.The report analyzes the specific cases which achieve functional equivalence by making use of the methods such as domestication,foreignization,addition and omission,which can also be applied to other interpreting activities.And the author hopes that other interpreters can take this report for reference when doing their interpreting.
