Abstract/Summary:
With the rapid development of China’s economy and the continuous improvement of its international status, the world economy is increasingly integrated and culturally diversified.Communication is becoming more common and essential. The implementation of The Belt and Road Initiative and Going Global strategy are effective ways to enhance the economic and cultural soft power of China. As the core of Chinese culture,Chinese classics and literature contain the virtues of traditional culture and ideology.Under this background, the translation of cultural terminologies and the understanding of its connotations are significant for the dissemination of Chinese culture. As one of the major sources of Chinese poetry,Chu Ci has far-reaching influence on Chinese language and Chinese literature. The translation of Chu Ci can contribute to the promotion of Chinese civilization and facilitate the communications between China and the western world.People, things and other cultural symbols and information in Chu Ci with unique local original characteristics has the distinct local color of Chu culture. The translation and dissemination of Chu Ci should proceed from the typical terminologies with unique Chu culture.Based on this, this study adopts the Acculturation Theory proposed by John W.Berry as the theoretical framework, comparatively analyzes the translation of terminologies in English versions of Chu Ci,trying to probe into the acculturation strategies made by different translators in the process of translation for future translation of terminologies in classics. The research questions to be solved in this thesis are as follows: First, how many types of terminology are there in Chu Ci? Second, what translation methods are used in each type? Third, what strategies of acculturation are applied in the translation versions? From the perspective of terminology translation, this study makes a classification of terminologies from the twenty-eight pieces of Chu Ci by The Historical and Cultural Dictionary of the State of Chu,and then combines the four strategies of acculturation theory, namely, integration, assimilation, separation and marginalization to conduct a comparative analysis of Elegies of the South by Xu Yuanchong,The Verse of Chu by and Ch’u Tz’u and the Songs of the South by David Hawkes.By analyzing selected examples, the author attempts to explore different translation methods and strategies of acculturation applied by different translators. This thesis begins with the introduction to the topic, including the backgroundand significance of the study, research questions, research methods and structure of the thesis. Then comes the literature review, including three parts of the translation and dissemination of Chu Ci,studies on terminology translation and the theory of acculturation. In the part of Chu Ci and terminology translation, the history and development of terminology translation and the related research achievements of scholars are expounded.Acculturation theory elaborates the history of its development,as well as the application of interdisciplinary applications, especially in translation. The theoretical framework presents John Berry’s theory of acculturation, introduces its characteristics and specific content. It also includes the implication of the theory on translation practice. The next two chapters are devoted to the major parts.Chapter Four introduces the definition, collection and classification of terminologies in Chu Ci,as well as its cultural connotation. The next chapter is the translation of terminologies in Chu Ci and acculturation interpretation, including translation methods used in each type and the acculturation strategies applied. The research findings indicate that there are five major types of terminologies in Chu Ci.Namely,Economy terminologies,Science and Technology terminologies,Etiquette and Customs terminologies,Literature terminologies and Art terminologies.Several major translation methods are adopted in different types of terminologies, including literal translation, transliteration, free rendering, addition, deletion, literal translation plus annotation, transliteration and free rendering and replacement. In the translation of Chu Ci,Xu Yuanchong mainly applied the assimilation strategy.Zhuo Zhengying applied three strategies of acculturation, thus assimilation, integration and separation.Integration is regarded as the ideal strategy of acculturation.David Hawkes mainly applied the separation strategy in the process of translation.
