According to the theory of functional equivalence of Nida, the goal of translation or interpretation is to achieve the most natural and appropriate equivalence between the source language and the target language. There are lexical, syntactic, textual and stylistic equivalences. However, absolute equivalence between two language forms does not exist.Rather, structures need to be adjusted according to characteristics of the source and target languages. The interpreter or translator should understand the essence and implication of the source language, and make flexible adjustment based on the linguistic feature of the target language,so as to achieve the equivalence not only in meaning but also in function.Similar effects in this way are created on the audiences/readers of the source language and target language. In this sense, this theory has guiding significance for interpreting practice and research on escort interpreting. From October 9th to 14th in 2017,the author,as the escort interpreter of Iranian agricultural delegates, participated in the academic exchange activity initiated by Consulate General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Guangzhou. In this practice report, the author chooses some major problems encountered and analyzes them from the perspective of lexical, syntactic and textual equivalences. Some coping strategies are put forward for the purpose of achieving equivalences between source language and target language, consequently promoting the interpretation quality of the author.Based on the above analysis, the author also gives some suggestions on improving interpreting competence-full preparations before interpreting, improvement of bilingual communication ability, accumulation of encyclopedic knowledge, and flexible utilization of interpreting skills. This practice report on escort interpreting, from the perspective of the theory of functional equivalence, makes the detailed case analysis of the author's practice by means of recording, text and note analysis.Suggestions are offered for further improvement of the author's interpreting ability and can also function as a reference for the study and practice of other student interpreters.
