Rock mechanics is a basic and technical discipline,which is an important basic course for undergraduates and postgraduates majored in geotechnical engineering,mining engineering and petroleum engineering.Fundamentals of Rock Mechanics is one of the most frequently cited reference books in foreign rock mechanics papers.It is the basic reference for rock mechanics researchers and can be used by researchers,teachers and technical personnel studied geophysics,geology,civil engineering,mining,water conservancy projects,tunnel engineering,earthquake prediction,national defense and other relevant departments for reference.The author is entrusted to translate the chapter ?,containing 12,638 words.Based on the author's participation in the translation of Fundamentals of Rock Mechanics which is guided by Skopos theory proposed by Katharina Reiss,Hans J.Vermeer and Christiane Nord,the author attempts to discuss the translation practice in a bid summarize some skills to improve the quality of scientific translation.The report consists of five chapters.First,project description,including introduction,source text analysis and target reader analysis.Second,pre-translation preparation,including parallel texts,translation tools,theoretical guidance,translation strategies and schedule of translation.Third,working description,including sentence expression,text structure,post-translation proofreading and revision,and feed-backs of translation works.Fourth,case analysis,including translation of lexical level,syntactic level and textual level.Finally comes the conclusion.
