This study was undertaken to investigate the new way to teach Junior Two English so as to cultivate students' autonomous learning ability,enhance students' interest in learning English and increase the students' English learning effectiveness through the 10-week(five cycles)application of the combination of guided learning plan with micro course.The theoretical bases of the study are Piaget's constructivism,Maslow and Rodgers' humanism,Vygotsky's zone of proximal development.Three questions are to be addressed as follows:1.To what extent can the combination of guided learning plan with micro course cultivate the students' autonomous learning ability?2.To what extent can the combination of guided learning plan with micro course enhance the students' interest in learning English?3.To what extent can the combination of guided learning plan with micro course increase the students' English learning effectiveness?Both quantitative and qualitative research designs were employed in the study.In the former one,the subjects were 50 students from Class Ten in a middle school in Yancheng.Two instruments were employed in this study:the tests and questionnaires.Tests included three parts concerning words,phrases and sentence structures,which were used to find out whether the new teaching mode increased the effectiveness of English learning.The data were collected both in class and after class.They were analyzed in terms of percentage,mean and range.The questionnaire was designed by the researcher,covering three aspects:autonomous learning ability,interest in learning English and the effectiveness of English learning.In the latter one,the teacher was interviewed to find out their reasons for the three aspects.The data were collected after class by the researcher and analyzed in terms of categorization and comparison.The major findings of this study are as follows:Firstly,all the students thought that the combination of the guided learning plan with the micro course could cultivate their autonomous learning ability.Among them,10%of the students thought that the teaching mode could cultivate students' autonomous learning ability greatly;28%of students,moderately;and 62%of students,slightly.This may be due to the emphasis of the steps like "self-study","cooperative activities","practice and consolidation",and "reflection after class" in this new teaching mode based on the people-centered concept.In addition,it may be that students,autonomous learning ability could not be cultivated a lot in a short time.Secondly,98%of students thought that the combination of the guided learning plan with the micro course could enhance their learning interest,of whom 16.33%,61.22%and 22.45%thought that this mode enhanced their learning interest greatly,moderately and slightly respectively.The reason may be that vivid videos were used as a new mode and students learned English in a relaxing atmosphere.Thirdly,all the students thought that the teaching mode could improve the effectiveness of their English learning,of whom 38%,56%and 6%thought this teaching mode improved the effectiveness greatly,moderately and slightly.In addition,the average score of students in tests was 24.56 and no one failed in the test when full mark was 30,which illustrated the effectiveness of guided learning plan and micro course.The reason might be that students were required to complete the tasks in the guided learning plan with micro course to preview the new lesson.Students could finish the tasks through cooperative learning,mutual discussion and feedback,and then internalize their knowledge.This study also has the following limitations:Firstly,the number of samples was small,and it is difficult to generalize to all different levels of English learners such as seventh graders in the junior school.Secondly,the design of the guided learning plan and the micro course were all completed by the author under the guidance of internship advisor so that it could not guarantee 100%the science and interest of guided learning plans and videos.
