Effect Of The Guided Learning Plan In Improving The Arts' Majors Autonomous Ability In Learning English

In teaching English to arts majors,more and more scholars advocate to cultivate students' autonomous learning ability(ALA)to enhance English learning efficiency and change the dull classroom atmosphere.As a new teaching practice in recent years,the guided learning plan(GLP),which is based on constructivism and meaningful learning and takes learning plan as a carrier,advocates learner-paced,autonomous learning.However,research on GLP has overwhelmingly concentrated on junior and senior high school students.Against such background,this research takes root in the classroom and conducts an experimental study to explore whether the application of the GLP can improve the ALA of fine arts majors.The main research questions include:(1)Can the GLP teaching improve students' autonomous awareness in English learning?(2)Can the GLP teaching strengthen students' English learning motivation?(3)Can the GLP teaching improve students' English learning strategies?(4)Can the GLP teaching improve students' performance on English tests?The study adopted the quasi-experimental design,the subjects being 70 sophomores from two parallel natural classes of Shanxi Normal University.The researcher randomly chose one class as the experimental class(EC)trained by GLP and the other as the control class(CC)adopting traditional teaching.Questionnaires and interviews are used to test subjects' ALA,test papers are used to check their English performance.All data were analyzed by SPSS 22.0to identify whether there were significant differences between the EC and the CC.The results indicate that:(1)The GLP enhanced learners' autonomous learning awareness.(2)The GLP stimulated student's motivation in English learning.(3)The GLP played a positive role in developing learners' learning strategies in English learning.(4)The GLP is helpful to improve learners' performance on English tests.
