| University name is a “business card” of the university,which contains the university's rich historical connotation and reflects the spirit of the university.With the continuous improvement of China's economy and the rising status of higher education,the Chinese university begins to have influence on the world.In order to gain an international popularity,universities in China tend to create an English name.The translation of university name in China has become an important part in the international communication,making it possible for foreign scholars to remember the names.What's more,the appropriate translation of the university names can also improve the university's international status and can disseminate its image.Based on the Hans Vermeer's Skopos Theory,the thesis discusses and analyzes the issues of the university name translation nowadays with a large collection of Chinese universities' names and their English translations.Under the guidance of Skopos theory,the semantic features of the college name translations are analyzed and concluded by using the Skopos Rule and the Fidelity Rule.Firstly,the thesis analyzes two purposes of the university name translation,that is,the purpose of information transmission and culture transmission.Then,the thesis applies the Fidelity Rule to analyze the phenomenon that the translation of the university name needs to be loyal to the source-language pronunciation by using the translation method of pinyin.Finally,the thesis analyzes the development of the university and points out that the university name translation should be fidelity to the current situations of the university guided by the Fidelity Rule.Besides,under the guidance of Skopos Theory,the thesis analyzes literal translation,transliteration and other translation strategies,and offers suggestions for translation.With the above analysis,the thesis concludes that the Skopos Theory can guide the translation of the university names. |
