A Comparative Study Of The Syntax And Semantics Of Mandarinchinese Adverbs Changchang And Wangwang

Changchang and wangwang is a pair of synonyms,with a high frequency in using.Hence,scholars studying Chinese adverbs and scholars of teaching Chinese as a foreign language have done a lot of comparative research on theie simailarities and differnces,and the achievements are quite rich.However,there are still some controversies,such as,their classification of parts of speech and their differences in synta x and semantics and so on.T herefore,three research questi ons are put forward as followings based on the research gaps:(1)Which category are changchang and wangwang classified to?(2)What are the syntactic differences between changchang and wangwang?(3)What are the semantic differences between changchang an d wangwang or reasons that lead to their syntactic differences?Firstly,a s for the part of speech classification of them,through literature review three viewpoints are found: temporal adverb,proponed by Zhao Yuanren,Zhu Dexi,Xing Fuyi etc.(Wang Yupei 2007),frequency adverb(Lu Jiping 1983;Liu Yuehua 1983)and frequency temporal adverb(Lu Jianming&Ma Zhen 1985;Zhang Yisheng 2000).Since the third view not only takes the systematicness and integrality of the classification of words into account,but also distinguishes the frequency temporal adverb from the other temporal adverbs,this view is adopted in this thesis,categorizing changchang and wangwang into the category of frequency temporal adverbs.Even though they fall under the same catogry,there are still overt differences between them.T herefore,this thesis firstly investigates the syntactic distributions of their combinations with verbs,adjectives and other adverbs,auxiliary words,etc.and the selection of sentence types.Based on a large body of data,it is found that changchang and wangwang do differ greatly at the syntactic level.And the syntactic differences are determined by the semantic differences.T hus,according to the syntactic differences,this thesis,further explores their syntactic differences in semantic features and semantic direction s,and explains the syntactic differences in return.At the last,on the basis of the above semantic differences between changchang and wangwang,this thesis further concludes that changchang is an objective frequency temporal adverb,while wangwang is a subjective frequency temporal adverb.This study provides a reference for the comparative study of mandarin Chinese adverbs changchang and wangwang.In addition,this thesis also has certain enlighten effect on the cognition of mandarin Chinese adverbs changchang and wangwang and the construction of linguistic theory.
