A Report On The E-C Translation Of Man And Wife (Excerpt) From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

This paper selects the first four chapters of the novel Man and Wife which is written by William Wilkie Collins(1824-1889),a British novelist during the Victorian Era,as research samples,and translates them into Chinese.Based on Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory,this paper makes the analysis of the translation in terms of lexicon,syntax and text,probes into the application of functional equivalence in novel translation,and summarizes the translation strategies and principles.Through this analysis,this paper demonstrates the practicality of translation methods involved in functional equivalence theory.And it is proved that Nida does not explicitly propose the use of translation strategies in the functional equivalence theory,of which the aim is to guarantee the coherency and intelligibility of translated version.It is further proved that it is reasonable to apply the functional equivalence theory emphasizing reader response to the translation of literary works.It provides practical experience for translators who are engaged in translating literary works in the future to pay attention to reader response instead of worrying about which translation strategy is followed.
