On The Translation Strategy Of The Interview Program Under The Skopotheorie

Translation is a crucial bridge between different cultures.Documentaries,as a platform of cultures,needs to be translated to help audiences get the information.With the rapid development and a great achievement on Reform and Opening policy,China is becoming closer to this world,meanwhile a lot more valuable documentaries are flooding into China.In fact,most of the documentary screening are English version,but there are also some classical Chinese interview programs(talk show),such as Yang Lan One On One.But in China,audiovisual interpretation is a new area,where there are few research and professional projects.Comparatively speaking,the interpretation of interview programs abroad is more extensive and in-depth,and foreign scholars have made more researches on translation strategies,interpretation skills and quality control.Therefore,the translator has to choose the correct translation strategy.With the guidance of Skopotheory,this paper mainly summarizes four translation strategies,and analyses four translation strategies used by the interviewer in the talk show with multiple cases.The five translation strategies are categorized as 1)domestication,the most frequently used strategy owing to the constraints of cross-culture,to transmit the information of source language to target audiences;2)adaptation,the adaptation of the linguistic structures of the source language according to the linguistic conventions of target language so as to make them more easily accepted and comprehensive by the target audience;3)reduction,the deduction of some useless messages and condensation of some repeated messages contained in the source language in a way of not having impact on the target audience’s understanding of original sentences;4)expansion,an addition to the original subtitles to make the implicit meaning of the original subtitles explicit by explaination so as to produce a complete and coherent semantic context for the target audience.Skopotheorie holds that interpretation is a purposeful activity: the end always justifies the means,and it is up to the translator to choose personally the feasible and efficient translation strategies.Therefore,it is possible that the subtitle interpretation of the same documentary end up with different versions by different translators.Good documentary interpretation can not only help the target audience understand quickly the “factual reality” presented in documentaries,but also prove to what degree the interpreter is responsible toward the interpretation task.Through this research on documentary interpretation,I hope that more researchers and scholars would focus on the study of this field,and the interpreter can always bear in mind the expectation of the target audience so that good interpretations can be produced to inform them what the program is really about.Moreover,the aim of cultural transmission and exchange can be achieved with the help of documentary production.
