With the development of globalization, China's political, economic and cultural communication with other countries has stepped into a new era, featuring with an all-round, rapid and multi-channel period. And the film art has rapidly and surprisingly become the main vehicle of culture communication. The large importation of good foreign films has become a big task and challenge for Chinese subtitlers.Film translation is a new research area in China. The domestic film translation research has just begun. It has not been paid as much attention as literature translation. No norms and standards of film translation have been set up yet. The translation quality is not on the same level. Some subtitles are great while some may cause misunderstandings. The development of subtitle translation does not keep its pace with the rapid film industry's progress. However, it has already formed systematical research in western countries. There are a lot of papers concerning film translation being published every year in the west. And some special committees mainly dealing with film translation has been set up for years. For example, European Association for Studies in Screen Translation (ESIST),etc. But their research fields are mainly among European languages. The English—Chinese translation has not been noticed. As far as the topic of this paper—adopting Skopotheorie to explain fuzzy language in film subtitle transition is concerned, no theoretical and systematical research has been found both in China and abroad. This is also the creative and original part of this paper. Some domestic scholars have published some papers on fuzzy language in literature translation. But nobody has ever dealt with fuzzy language in the field of subtitle translation. So this paper will make a tentative study on fuzzy language in subtitle translation and try to fill the gap in this field.Skopotheorie is proposed by Hans.J Vermeer, who is the representative figure of German functional translation theory. The main idea of this theory is that translation is a communicative action, that is to say, "the translation purpose justifies the translation process", "the end justifies the means". In this paper the author is going to adopt skopostheorie to explain fuzzy language in subtitle translation. The subtitlers should aims at offering information, helping the audience appreciate the film from both visual and auditory channel, realizing the recreational and commercial goal of film. The study will be made from two aspects: the translation direction and text type.
