A Study On The Present Situation Of English Homework Design In Primary School

As an important part of English teaching,English homework is an extension and supplement of English classroom teaching.With the full implementation of The New Curriculum Standards,English homework has attracted the attention of teachers and students.In nine years of English teaching practice in primary school,the author found that some teachers always arrange single and mechanical English homework and students feel boring during the completion of English homework,there are still many problems in the design of English homework in primary school.Therefore,it is necessary to investigate the current situation of English homework design in primary school,find out the main problems in the English homework design and try to find effective solutions and suggestions.Based on the analysis of existing research results at home and abroad,combined with the actual English teaching of primary schools in Tianshui city,the author used questionnaire,text analysis,interview and other research methods to summarize at following six aspects: Attitudes towards English homework,content and form of English homework,time and quantity of English homework,difficulty of English homework,purpose of English homework,and parental guidance.There are three research questions in this study:(1)What is the present situation of English homework design in primary school?(2)What are the problems of present English homework design in primary school?(3)What are the suggestions to optimizing the present English homework design in primary school?The research results show that the current English homework design adopts “one size fits all”,ignores students' individual differences;the content and form of English homework is relatively single,it mainly remains simple and mechanical copy-writing and recitation,and the design of listening and speaking is neglected;Englishhomework is designed for a single purpose,and the students have different understanding of the purpose of English homework;and 70% of English teachers require parents to guide English homework,but the ability of parental guidance is not fully considered in the process of designing English homework.Finally,based on the Zone of Proximal Development and Multiple Intelligence Theory,the author proposes the following suggestions for the main problems existing in the current situation of English homework design.(1)Designing layered English homework for students to choose independently and respecting students' individual differences;(2)Designing diversified English homework to enrich types of English homework;(3)Focusing on the diversified purpose of English homework and clarifying the purpose of English homework;(4)Strengthening parental indirect participation in English homework and reducing parental direct guidance on English homework.All of these suggestions may provide reference for primary school English teaching,design efficient English homework,and then better promote the development of English teaching in primary schools.In short,this study is in an attempt to make teachers have a good understanding of the current situation of English homework design in primary school,and promote teachers to design efficient English homework in future English teaching.
