Translation Of Adverbial Clauses In Meteorological Popular Science Texts From The Perspective Of Skopos Theory

In this thesis,the source text The World of Sport is selected from Chapter Four of The Weather Factor,a book written by David M.Ludlum.The source text can be categorized into the informative text that focuses on the popular science of meteorology.Popular science text aims to improve people's sense of science and convey specialized knowledge of different fields with a simple language.In The World of Sport,the adverbial clause is a hard nut for the translator to crack when understanding and translating the source text.This thesis aims to discuss the translation strategies for adverbial clauses from the perspective of Skopos theory.Therefore,the translator adopted four strategies,including revision,conversion and division as well as combination to understand the contents of adverbial clauses.In order to understand the source text accurately and render a better target text,the translator made adequate preparations to tackle the different problems in the process of thesis-writing.According to the relevant researches in CNKI,there are a great many papers about the translation strategies for scientific and technological texts where Skopos theory is applied.Nevertheless,few of mentioned papers deal with adverbial clauses.The Weather Factor is an appropriate text for both translation practice and theoretical discussion for adverbial clauses.The translator adopted Skopos theory and combined some specific cases to discuss some translation strategies for adverbial clauses.Discussions in this thesis might be of great help to some translators.This thesis is divided into four chapters.The first chapter is the introduction,which introduces the source text and process of this translation.The second chapter focuses on the Skopos theory and its three rules.The third chapter introduces four translation strategies for adverbial clauses on the basis of Skopos theory.In the fourth chapter,the translator summarizes this translation project,discuses findings and points out the limitations.
