This thesis is a translation report on the English-Chinese translation of Chapters 3 and 6 of International Migration:the Well-being of Migrants. In this book,Chapter 3 explores such issues as the characteristics of international migrants and changing international migration trends globally, and Chapter 6 is the conclusion part, proposing a transdisciplinary approach to deal with the complex issue of international migration. These two chapters present an objective description of the international migration landscape, discuss major issues in this field, and offer countermeasures to address those issues. Therefore, this translation project can help Chinese readers to become acquainted with related international migration issues and facilitate the research into and the resolution to relevant population movement issues. This translation report consists of three parts. The first part is the introduction, the second part discusses the translation process, and the last one is the conclusion. In this report,a brief introduction to the author Philomena de Lima and the original text is first given, followed by a discussion of reasons for the topic selection, its significance, and preparations for the project. It then gives a detailed introduction to House's model of Translation Quality Assessment with a focus on its core idea, namely the semantic, pragmatic, and textual equivalence between the source text and the target text.Based on this core idea, two guiding principles of this translation project are then established:faithfulness and expressiveness. The report analyzes the linguistic features of the source text, discovering a high frequency of abstract nouns at the lexical level, frequent use of long sentences and passive sentences at the syntactic level, and multiple cohesive devices at the textual level. After this, translation strategies are designed accordingly. Then presented is a detailed analysis of the translation of the original text under different situational dimensions.Apart from this, difficulties encountered during translation are listed, including the translation of abstract nouns, passive sentences, and long sentences.Translation techniques that are applied to achieve faithfulness and expressiveness are also listed, such as addition, conversion, and division. In the end, this report introduces the proofreading of the translation.Following a summary of the work done throughout the translation process, this report points out the limitations of the project, and specifies the remaining work, including to systematically evaluate the quality of the translation based on the model,to make a vocabulary list for future reference, and to enhance Chinese competence by reading extensively and practicing Chinese writing substantially.Experience can be drawn from this project that in order to produce a quality translation, translators should be well-prepared before translation, seek help from different resources available while doing translation, and practice translation on a regular basis.
