A Report On Translation Of Chapter One Of Criminal Law

This is a report on the translation of Chapter One of Criminal Law,written by Arnold H.Loewy,which is one of classic books of West Nutshell Series.This book is divided into seven parts to highly summarize several basic questions and main concepts of criminal law in the United States,including punishment,specific crimes,ingredients of a crime,special defenses,proof of facts,inchoate and group criminality,and limitations of the criminal law.In this book some legal characteristics is very prominent.At the level of lexicon,many legal terms and archaic words are used,and at the level of syntax,there are many passive sentences and complex sentences.In the course of translation,the author analyzed the content and features of the source text and at the same time,the author,taking the skopos theory as the theoretical foundation,attempted to deal with the difficulty in the course of translation,especially translating complex and elliptical sentences.In order to be coherent and cohesion in writing,the author,from the perspective of the skopos rule,chose some different translation methods to translate complex sentences,such as amplification,omission,conversion and splitting,and what's more,synthesizing is adopted to translate elliptical sentences.
