A Report On C-E Translation Of Road And Bridge In Civil Engineering

With the steady and rapid development of Chinese economy,the prospects of highways and related project construction are prosperous and various activities of attracting project investment are also growing in frequency.From bid inviting to construction,every link needs to be translated and the requirements of translation task become increasingly higher.Tianjin Municipal Engineering Design&Research Institute intends to promote overseas project actively in further development.So the advanced engineering technology texts need to be translated into English,which can prepare for project profile introduction to foreign-funded company with intentions to cooperate in further bid inviting activities.All this is built on the basis of overseas technician's accurate and comprehensive understanding for our engineering project,therefore,translators need to act as a bridge to translate source language texts into target language texts and to convey required information achieving effective the company's goal of publicity to foreigners and introduction to advanced engineering technology,helping company develop better.Hence the translating text must be enough valued as it works through the whole process of communication and exchange.The source materials are chosen from Road and Bridge in Civil Engineering,which is compiled by Tianjin Municipal Engineering Design&Research Institute.The translation text is about 10089 Chinese words,introducing bridge history,bridge construction and highway etc..As technological exchange text,its purpose is to introduce correctly advanced engineering technology to target readers.But in the process of translation,the translator finds that there are many specialized vocabularies and sentences in the text.How to translate these vocabularies and sentences accurately is the key point of finishing this translation task of high-quality.The functionalist skopos theory believe that translation purpose determine translation process and translation strategies.Therefore,the functionalist skopos theory is finally determined for guiding this translation practice.Except for introduction and conclusion,the report is described from four aspects.The first is description of translation task,containing introduction for background of this translation project and analysis for contents and features of the source language text.The second is representation of the translation process.In this process,the translator tries some sample translation and solves the problems encountered in the translation process under the guidance of skopos theory,finally determining anti-division,word formation and conversion of active or passive voice as translation strategies for this translation practice.In the third chapter,through case analysis this thesis proves that three principles of skopos theories is more suitable for achieving the aims of keeping the objectivity,preciseness and specialization of the target text,and maintaining the features of consistency and logicality of the source text.As a result of the this translation practice,it is believed that in order to guarantee the quality of translation,the translator need to possesses some qualities such as proficient translating skills,abundant translation practice and adequate related expertise.
