Economic globalization tightens relations among countries all over the world, with English as a global common language. However, another emerging “universal language” — volunteer service — is coming into view in recent years.A number of enterprises actively shoulder corporate social responsibility(CSR)and promote volunteer service to the society beyond commercial operation and management.IBM Corporate Service Corps(CSC)Project is one of them.As a part of IBM “Global Citizen's Portfolio”,IBM CSC project was established in 2008,with the target of solving problems in communities around the world and cultivating leadership of its employees. The author was lucky to work as an intern for IBM CSC34 in Oct.,2016,interpreting during interviews and meetings in the way of consecutive interpreting. The total length of recording is nearly fifty hours. The program is mainly conducted in the form of business consulting interviews, with subjects covering the promotion and marketing of blind massage medical healthcare service. The language of text is formal and professional, posing a high request to interpreters' comprehension ability.Interpreters' comprehension of the speaker's speech is the most basic and important section of interpretation and it influences the quality of interpretation to a large extent. To improve the quality of the interpretation and her ability of interpreting, the author classified the difficulties she encountered into linguistic difficulties and extralinguistic difficulties with the guidance of Gile's comprehension equation. The former includes number, terminology, accent and long and complicated sentence while the latter includes encyclopedia, industry background and knowledge about the local place.Through the analysis for the difficulties combining concrete examples she met in the program, the author summarizes interpreting techniques she used in the practice and lists solutions, including omission, addition, and paraphrasing to solve the difficult problems she met in the consecutive interpreting program. The author also played a role of assistant and tour guide, helping IBMers live better in China. To some extent, this report is instructive to interpreters who take part into consecutive interpreting programs like this. The author hopes that her analysis of this consecutive interpreting practice can more or less contribute to the interpreters' recognition of the importance of comprehension and identification of interpreting difficulties from all aspects in similar programs. She wants them to improve the comprehension capability through adequate preparation and interpreting techniques, and provide qualified interpretation to the client.
