A Translation Report Of Legal Academic Writing On “the Transnationalization Of Law”

This thesis is a translation practice report.Its original text is selected from an academic paper titled “Transnationalization of Law: Rethinking Law through Transnational Environmental Regulation” published in the journal of Transnational Environmental Law by Cambridge University Press in 2017.This paper studies the relationship between transnational regulation and law,tries to change traditional understanding of law and invites alternative modes of understanding law.Taking personal interest as the starting point,the author chose this academic paper as the translation practical text and independently undertook the full-text translation of the original text.First of all,this report briefly introduces the translation task and process analyzing the characteristics of the source text from the aspects of lexical,syntactic and textual level.In terms of vocabulary,the source text contains terminologies,archaic words,loanwords,common words with uncommon meanings,etc.;at the syntactic and textual level,the source text contains a large number of coordinate constructions,main-subordinate compound sentences and complex appositive components.Next,in the light of the linguistic characteristics of the source text,the author takes the pragmatic theory on adaptation put forward by Jef.Verschueren as the guiding theory.In view of the difficulties encountered in lexical,syntactic and textual translation,translation methods such as amplification,omission,conversion,passive voice transformation,division and combination are adopted respectively.The purpose of this translation report is to show how the author applies the translation methods she has mastered to solve practical problems,and to provide reference for further translation researches of legal academic papers.
