English-Chinese translation can be viewed as a kind of communication or conversion between English and Chinese. However, due to great differences in the way of thinking and the mode of expression between English and Chinese, the literal translation from English into Chinese is likely to fail to convey the precise meaning and information of the source text,so it is necessary to change the mode of expression and shift perspectives in translation.By virtue of shift of perspective, the translator can convey the meaning of the source text faithfully and make the target text readable. Therefore,in this E-C translation practice, shift of perspective is a necessary translation strategy. The source text of this translation practice is excerpted from a parenting book What Great Parents Do,whose writer is Erica Reischer,PhD,a clinical psychologist and parent educator. The book contains 75 practical parenting strategies, which is concise and easy to read.Based on the translation task, the report analyzes the source text and introduces some translation difficulties caused by differences between English and Chinese so as to explain why it is necessary to apply shift of perspective to the translation of What Great Parents Do.Studying some scholars' insights into shift of perspective and based on personal translation experience, the translator summed up three types of shift of perspective: 1)shift of perspective at lexical level;2)shift of perspective at syntactic level;3)shift of perspective at cultural level.Through concrete case analysis,it is further proved that shift of perspective is an effective and practical strategy for tackling barriers in translating parenting texts. All in all, while translating such texts, translators should realize the necessity of shifting perspectives and address translation barriers flexibly,so as to guarantee that the target text is readable and reproduce the information in the source text precisely.
